Statement by Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC)/CONEL Regarding Nomination of Dr. Ben Carson to Lead HUD

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 5, 2016 – Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), the world’s largest Hispanic Christian organization, representing millions of Evangelicals worldwide, today made the following statement regarding President-elect Donald J. Trump’s nomination of Dr. Ben Carson as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:

“Dr. Ben Carson is the 21st century version of Jack Kemp as it pertains to educating, equipping and empowering individuals, particularly those in urban areas, with the necessary resources to prosper and to pivot from government dependency to personal responsibility. We don’t want our inner-city residents to mearly survive, but to thrive. Dr. Carson’s personal narrative, his commitment and his faith, compel him to serve all Americans but especially those in the inner-city with that very objective.”

NHCLC/CONEL is the world’s largest Hispanic Christian organization, which serves as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and hundreds of thousands of additional congregations spread worldwide throughout the Spanish-speaking diaspora.
