Statement by Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC) / Conela, Regarding the Grand Jury Decision in the Death of Eric Garner December 4, 2014

“Eric Garner should be alive today. His death can only be described as tragic. The silencing of his voice and termination of life must be addressed with conviction and compassion. Law enforcement officers place their lives on the line daily and for that we stand with gratitude. Nevertheless, as Christians we must repudiate any and all abuses, engagement of excessive force and actions that harm rather than ‘serve and protect.’ May the ‘shalom’ of God rest upon all of our communities as we address these issues with truth and love. ”

NHCLC/CONELA is the largest Hispanic Christian organization. It serves as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and another 500,000 congregations spread throughout the Spanish-speaking diaspora.
