Phil Simms was born on his grandfather’s farm in Springfield, Kentucky. He attended a small elementary school where he developed an early interest in sports. After his family moved to Louisville, he attended a Catholic high school and played football.
Phil wanted to stay home for college and chose Morehead State University in eastern Kentucky. He started as quarterback for the college football team where he played well enough to be noticed by professional football scouts.
Phil was drafted by the New York Giants and began an illustrious career. He played for fourteen years, was selected for two Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl where he was also the MVP of the game.
Phil was a strong player and determined competitor but had one weakness. He occasionally became so upset at making a mistake that he would temporarily lose focus.
One night in January I was watching Simms play in a crucial game and saw his weakness and the solution in one dramatic scene.
Simms had just thrown an interception, and the TV cameras were following him as he left the field, head down. When he reached the sideline his coach Bill Parcells, said to him as he passed by, “Forget it”. When Phil ignored him, the coach grabbed his helmet, jerked him to a stop and said, “I said, forget it!!”Simms immediately snapped out of it, later returned to the field and won the game.
Bill Parcell’s words to his quarterback that night are a stirring lesson to anyone who surrenders to regret and defeat. Just “forget it!”
The secret is to trust God and KEEP MOVING FORWARD. The victory is just ahead.
The Bible says in Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” NIV
