He was an unusual man with an unusual background.
Friends who knew him as a young man always commented on his warmth and kindness. He was elected as a student leader in his college mostly because other students liked and trusted him.
When he interviewed for a job with a world famous organization, he thanked the interviewer for the opportunity and, instead of focusing on his performance, complimented the interviewer on her performance.
Later in his career, people who worked for him repeatedly said they would die for him. Once when an employee broke down because his mother was sick, he called the mother and helped with her medical expenses. He barely knew the employee.
When he finally landed his dream job, he instructed his assistant to send him a selection of the many letters he received so he could personally respond to the writers. If they shared a need he sent a personal check to “help out”. When another assistant expressed concern about the time required for him to answer the letters, he said it was important because “everybody needs a little encouragement”.
He was busy with vital responsibilities but always believed that “people came first.”
This man’s name is Ronald Reagan and he was the 40th President of the United States.
You’re never too big to put people first.
The Bible says in Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather value others above yourselves.” NIV
