While doing research for one of my books I interviewed a business leader who was closely connected to my friend and mentor, Dexter Yager.
Some of you have probably read this story but it is so powerful I felt led to reintroduce it here.
Dexter, who built what is still the largest Amway business in the world, was in Texas for a high level leadership conference.
One of his Diamond level participants told me that when he and several other Diamonds asked to meet with Dexter, arrangements were made to gather in Dexter’s suite after an evening seminar.
Everyone arrived at the suite but there was no Dexter. After 30 minutes, my friend volunteered to find Dexter. What happened next is special.
When the Diamond located Dexter, he was in the corner of the hotel lobby, deep in conversation with a young woman employee.
The woman was tattooed, with multiple body piercings. She was dressed in a worn-out cleaning outfit while Dexter was in a tuxedo.
When the Diamond approached, he saw that the girl was crying. Dexter motioned for him to wait while he continued to talk with the young woman.
When Dexter finished and the two men were walking to the elevator, the Diamond asked Dexter why he would “waste his time” with the young woman when business leaders were waiting to see him.
Dexter stopped and said that the woman was lost and confused and needed guidance. He told the Diamond that when he “saw her heart”, he knew God wanted him to help her.
Ask God to show you the true heart of other people. You may be His instrument to change their lives.
The Bible says in I Samuel 16:7, “…People look at the outward appearance, But the Lord looks at the heart.”
