When young actor Tim Matheson was seventeen, he landed a small role in the movie, “Yours, Mine and Ours”, starring Lucille Ball.

Matheson remembers his first day rehearsing a scene with the legendary comic actress. Ball arrived on set, serious and prepared. With no explanation, she walked over to a table and moved a glass one half inch to the left.

The director called “action!” and Ball moved flawlessly through the scene, creating “laugh out loud” moments of comic genius. At one critical point she unexpectedly spilled the liquid in her glass onto the spot where she had removed the first glass. Everyone roared with laughter.

Matheson then realized that when the actress had earlier moved the first glass, she had actually been preparing for a scene no one saw coming. It was brilliant.

As the movie was filmed, Ball continued to surprise everyone with her almost perfect performance. Matheson later commented that her intense professional preparation was the basis for her screen success.

Work hard at whatever God has called you to do. You cannot wait for success and hope it arrives. You must “get ready” to succeed. Preparation gives birth to results.
