Find Your Champion

In 1977 a professional musician from Texas named Randy Brooks wrote a Christmas song. He based it on childhood memories of his family, especially his grandmother.

Randy performed his song at local events for the next two years. While in Lake Tahoe he met a touring couple whose van had broken down in the resort town.

The musical duet was an unusual combination. He was a veterinarian, and his wife was a flight attendant, who had both left their jobs to pursue an entertainment career.

The couple loved Randy’s song and asked to use it in their act. It was so popular that they spent $2,000 to make 600 recordings to sell.

Even with this promising start the song failed to get traction until a radio DJ in San Francisco decided to “champion” the song. His commitment made the difference.

The song sold consistently until another breakthrough in 1984 when a re-release reached number one on the Billboard’s Christmas Hits chart.  The song is now a Christmas favorite that plays thousands of times every December.

It took a champion to make Elmo and Patsy’s recording of “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” an international success.

Whenever God gives you an idea, ask Him for a champion who will push it forward. And maybe you could be God’s champion for someone else.

The Bible says in Proverbs 27:2, “Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth…” NIV
