As with many of you, Amy and I have certain places we like to eat. We have a favorite ice cream shop, a favorite Mexican restaurant and a favorite pizza place. We visit each of these often.
We have simple pizza preferences. We usually order a plan cheese pie. But over several recent visits we noticed that when a particular person made our pizza, it came out bad. Sometimes it was so burnt it was inedible. Other times, there was so little cheese that it more resembled a sauce only option.
After several disappointing experiences I decided to confront the pizza maker. His inability to make a good pizza was ruining one of our favorite restaurants.
I admit that I was aggravated as I prepared to speak with the young man. But when Amy and I entered the restaurant, the young man saw us, hurried over and expressed his pleasure at seeing us. He said he so enjoyed our company that he always tried “extra hard” when he made our pizza.
Ashamed of my attitude, I invited him to sit with us (it was not busy) and we began a conversation.
We soon realized that he was not a Cristian. During the course of our talk, we shared our relationship with Christ. He was open and interested in learning more. When we finished, he eagerly agreed to visit our church.
I sensed that God had reminded me of “what matters”. This young man’s eternal destiny was far more important than the quality of our pizza. I am thankful I did not allow my petty aggravation to ruin a spiritual opportunity.
Always be sensitive to “what matters”.
Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.” NIV
