I recently read a news report about a shooting in a large American city. There were innocent victims and brave police officers who prevented further loss of life. For three days the story drove the national news cycle.
The day after the incident, I read a post from a prominent political figure from that city who was away when the shootings occurred.
This man is a well-known official and the media carefully covered his statement. He expressed dismay and concern, but his next statement, I think was based on a serious misunderstanding.
The man ended his post by saying that the victims would definitely be “in his thoughts”. I do not doubt the man’s sincerity, but I believe he failed to understand the meaning of his words.
Thinking of someone is something you do that has no effect on the other person. It is rooted in you. The deceased individuals and their families are not helped by someone just “thinking of them.” If that is all that happens.
It is far better to pray for people. When you pray, you “engage God”. When you connect with God in prayer, you open the door to God’s actions.
I appreciate those who “think” of others. They are graciously trying to acknowledge the needs of individuals. God bless them. But ultimately people don’t need our thoughts, they need God’s power.
When you hear of someone who is hurt, don’t just think about them. Pray for them. That can make all the difference.
The Bible says in I Timothy 2:1, “I urge then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people” NIV
