In 1977, Tom Helms was a 26-year-old struggling artist in New York City.
Depressed over his lack of success, Tom decided to commit suicide at Christmas. He carefully surveyed the crowds going in and out of the Empire State Building and calculated the best time to enter the building to carry out his plan.
He took an elevator to the 86th floor and exited onto the outside observation deck. He looked over the railing at the 1,000 foot drop, paused a moment, then climbed over the barrier. He then jumped (he thought) to his death.
A half hour later he awoke, lying on a ledge one floor below the observation deck. A sudden wind gust of 30 mph had come “out of nowhere”, lifted him up and deposited his body on the 85th floor ledge.
The young man instantly abandoned his suicidal intention and decided he wanted to live. He pounded on a window and an astonished engineer in the NBC TV transmitter room opened the window and helped Tom come inside.
The story of Tom’s miraculous escape from death made national news. He was flooded with hundreds of requests to host him for Christmas dinner. The overwhelming response of love and care changed his life.
One journalist commented that “the young man had a plan, but God had a better one”.
Don’t ever surrender to doubt and depression. God always has a better plan for you.
The Bible says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” NIV
