Don’t Worry Be Happy

Jerry Falwell was often under stress and often attacked. He was under relentless pressure and carried huge responsibilities. He was also one of the happiest people I have ever known.

I was having breakfast one morning with “Doc”, as most friends called him. He had just been slandered on national television and was, in addition, facing a critical financial deadline at the university he founded.

I was about to ask how he was doing and offer prayer when he spoke first. He was excited about a new opportunity and described the possibilities with enthusiasm. His cheerfulness was contagious.

He paused then said something I have never forgotten. He laughed and thanked God that he was so happy. When I asked if the constant stress troubled him, he said he just “rejoiced in the Lord”.

His decision to be happy elevated and energized his life.

In all the time I worked with him, he was always happy.

Laughter has a powerful psychological effect. Research at the University of Maryland found that blood flow to the heart increases 90% when test subjects watched (and laughed at) a funny movie, equivalent to a good workout. Watching a sad movie decreased blood flow by 35%.

Laughter can dissolve negative emotions and increase feelings of wellbeing. It’s like a workout for your soul.

It’s no surprise that the Bible says in Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.” NLT

Don’t worry. Be happy.
