I was 22 and Amy was 21. We were on our Honeymoon at Cumberland Falls State Park in Kentucky.
Amy was still in college, and I was earning a Master’s Degree at a graduate school. We had little money and less time and went to two Kentucky state parks for two days each (the other was Kentucky Lake).
I was wildly in love and wanted to be with Amy every minute, so I did not expect an emotional reaction that surprised me.
Our first night at the park lodge began happily. We ate fried chicken in the dining room and took a moonlight walk along one of the largest waterfalls in the Eastern United States, home to the only Moonbow in the western hemisphere.
After returning to our room, we went to bed. At 2 am I woke up in a panic. I was overwhelmed with anxiety and carefully rose, dressed, and left the room.
I walked under a full moon to the entrance to the lodge. At the entrance were two locally carved pillars of limestone. I climbed one and sat on the top.
I prayed for God to help and guide me. I could not explain my sudden fear. Then I realized the reason for my strange depression. I was tired, emotionally exhausted and MARRIED. Without warning, I suddenly thought, “what have I done?”.
I loved Amy and wanted to be with her. I knew God had brought us together but felt unprepared for the responsibilities of having a wife. I was young and scared.
After an hour of prayer and thought, I climbed down and returned to the room and went back to sleep.
The next morning I woke feeling entirely normal. The fear and anxiety were gone. I looked at Amy and had never felt happier.
When you know you are following God’s will, don’t allow momentary fear and doubt to stop you. Follow your convictions and KEEP GOING.
