Romans 8:28 is one of the most important but misunderstood verses in the Bible. The verse reads, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.” NLT
The verse is sometimes misquoted as “everything will work out for the best.” But that is not what it says. First, it is only addressed to those who “love God and are called according to His purpose for them”, and it says that God Himself will cause everything to work together for their good.
The verse is important because it is the ultimate antidote for worry and the final cure for fear. It is a reminder that God works EVERYTHING for good for those who love Him.
An unusual story illustrates what this means.
On November 28, 1950, the United States 1st Marine Division, along with a small group of British commandos and South Korean policemen (around 30,000 men) were ambushed by 120,000 Communist Chinese soldiers as they camped by the Chosin Reservoir in South Korea.
As the battle raged, the temperature dropped to 35 below zero, freezing food as ammunition ran low.
The Marines called for desperately needed food supplies and ammunition. But when the U.S. Army airdropped the crates, the soldiers found the ammo but instead of food rations they received thousands of tootsie rolls.
After a short period of anger and disappointment, some of the officers realized that because the tootsie rolls did not freeze, they were available as food. The tootsie rolls (containing sugar) gave the men enough energy to keep fighting until reinforcements arrived and saved the troops.
What seemed wrong turned out to be right.
That is the lesson of Romans 8:28. You can trust God to transform whatever you have into whatever you need.
