Since the year 2000, Amy and I have conducted marriage enrichment seminars, called Honeymoon For Life. Almost 12,000 couples have attended, many more than once.

These seminars are offered each February. Since the COVID lockdown we have offered a popular online option. As we prepared for this year’s event, I remembered a story I often told at the beginning of the seminar. Couples have consistently loved this story because it contains a great relationship secret.

As Amy and I approached our wedding in Estes Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary, we received a message from Dr. David Seamands, the pastor scheduled to perform the ceremony. He asked us to meet him at a small chapel behind the main auditorium after our rehearsal.

When we arrived, Dr. Seamands told us to stand facing one another. He then told me to reach out my open hands. He then told Amy to place her hands in mine. He next asked me if I understood what I was about to do the next day. He informed me that Amy’s hands represented her heart. She had chosen to entrust her life and future to me. Dr. Seamands then asked if I would commit to honor that trust and always love and protect her. I said yes.

Dr. Seamands then reversed the sequence and had me place my hands inside Amy’s. He asked if she would always hold my heart and commit to loving and supporting me. She said yes.

Dr. Seamands finished by telling us that we had just experienced the true meaning of our wedding.

We have honored and fulfilled that commitment our entire marriage. I believe this selfless pledge to honor the other’s trust is a great relationship secret.
