Ask for Help

I was meeting with my friend and mentor Dexter Yager one night when he surprised me with an observation.

Dexter had been listening as I described the multiple things I was doing. When I paused, he stopped me and said he had noticed that I seemed tired and frazzled. He then gave me some of the best advice I have ever received.

Dexter said he had watched me be a “lone wolf” as I pushed ahead without any help. He pointed out that I could only go so far on my own and if I wanted to go all the way, I needed help. He then gave the advice that changed my direction.

Dexter said that I would never get help until I ASKED for help. He said I should start by asking God then ask other people for help as well. That conversation was a breakthrough for me. My performance and productivity dramatically improved when I asked for help.

A great example of this is the story of R. U. Darby.
Darby discovered a vein of gold in nineteenth century California but when it ran out he sold the mine to a junkyard dealer.

The junkyard owner decided to ask for help and engaged a mining engineer to investigate the site. The engineer located another gold vein THREE FEET from where Darby had stopped drilling. The new owner made millions from the mine.

Always ask for help (starting with God). You don’t know everything.

The Bible says in Matthew 7:7, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” NIV
