Dan and Dorothy owned a canning business in Michigan. They worked closely with local farmers to can fresh vegetables and market the products regionally.
Dan developed a good relationship with the farmers who trusted him with their business. Customers were equally positive about Dan’s canned food and the company flourished.
In 1927 Dan and Dorothy were dealing with the physical weakness of their six-month-old daughter Sally. When they consulted a local doctor, it was discovered that Sally had difficulty eating. Dan and Dorothy decided to use the fresh canned produce they sold to feed their daughter. They emptied cans of vegetables and puréed them into a soft mash. Sally eagerly ate the food and grew healthy.
Dan and Dorothy then turned their idea into the first commercially manufactured baby food. The food was popular but expensive. With the Great Depression raging, they were advised to drop baby food because it was more expensive to produce. The couple, however, believed parents needed the product and continued to make and sell baby food.
The couple then decided to offer free pamphlets to mothers filled with helpful childcare suggestions.
Over the next year, 20,000 mothers wrote the company asking for advice. Dorothy helped answer each letter personally.
Dan and Dorothy Gerber built the Gerber baby food business by caring about people. Their success was based on love.
When you care about people, God honors you and blesses your work. There is no better way to live.
The Bible says in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
