Connect with People

Recently I unexpectedly received information about a slice of my Father’s past that I never knew existed.

My wife Amy and I were eating in a local restaurant when I saw a man enter to pick up an order. I walked over to the man and asked about him. I had known and liked him for many years.

After a few moments of conversation, he said that his uncle had once told him a story about my father. His uncle was with the United States Army in World War Two and assigned to the occupying forces in Japan under the leadership of General Douglas McArthur.

He was walking down a street in Tokyo when he heard someone call his name. He looked ahead and saw a young man in a United States Navy uniform coming toward him. The man smiled and said, “you’re from Prestonsburg [Kentucky]”. The first man replied, “Yes, and you’re Prent Ball from Prestonsburg.”

The young men laughed and talked, happy to have found someone from home. Later, the man telling the story, remembered how wonderful that human connection felt.

I had never known my Dad was in Japan at the end of the war. He never mentioned it. But that experience of human connection teaches a great lesson.

You need to connect with other people. Treat everyone with sensitivity and kindness. See them and hear them. Ask God to use you to touch their lives. They need the connection.

The Bible says in Proverbs 18:24, “A man who has friends must himself be friendly…” NKJV
