Eyes on the Goal

Young Clarence had an unusual way to pay for college. He trapped frogs and sold them to the Bronx Zoo.

When his part-time business failed to meet his second-year tuition, he dropped out and moved from New Jersey to New Mexico to work for the U S Department of Agriculture as a taxidermist.

Clarence left the Department after three years and worked as a trapper for a private company in Labrador. While there he noticed that the native Inuit people successfully froze and ate local fish. Frozen foods were known in the food industry but tasted terrible when defrosted. Clarence decided to invent a device that could duplicate the natural process he observed from the Inuit.

In 1922, Clarence introduced his invention, gained several investors and started the Clothel Refrigeration Company. But because of the continued distrust of frozen food, his company was bankrupt in two years.

In 1924, he announced an improved machine and relaunched the business which AGAIN FAILED.

In 1925, Clarence released an even better invention and tried again. Although sales of frozen foods were still disappointing, an investment firm bought his machine patents for 22 million dollars (around 400 million dollars today). By the early 1930’s, the new company had become the General Foods Corporation and hired Clarence as the president of its frozen foods division.

Clarence Birdseye invented an entire industry and became wealthy and successful because he always kept his EYES ON THE GOAL. This enabled him to ignore failure and keep trying.

Ask God to give you the right goal, then never look back.

The Bible says in Philippians 3:14, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” NIV
