In 1931, an out-of-work architect, Alfred Butts, wanted to do two things. He wanted to invent something that would help families be together and hoped that his idea would provide income.
Butts used one big insight to develop his idea. Because the Great Depression has cost him his job, giving him time to think, he realized that there were probably millions of people in the same situation. Lack of employment had given them more time.
Butts decided to organize his ideas into a game for families. He used his architectural skills to design a fun, competitive game that an entire family could enjoy together.
Butts’s game was so popular with friends that in 1948, he and his wife set up a workshop to produce the game. They then marketed the product to local stores.
Demand grew every year until 1953, when the Selchow & Righter Company bought the game. Since then, Butts’s idea has become the second most popular game in the world, making hundreds of millions of dollars.
But the best thing about the game is its original purpose, because Scrabble was invented to help families do things together (it’s my wife’s parents favorite game).
Thank God for your family. Do all you can to be close and together.
The Bible says in Colossians 3:14, “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” NIV
