God’s Surprises

Robert Moffat was a dedicated missionary to South Africa during much of the nineteenth century. When he returned home on furlough, he sensed a need for more than rest. He felt a divine compulsion to encourage other men to come to Africa to spread the message of Christ.

This was a time when most of the African subcontinent was unexplored even by those who lived there. Because of the potential danger, Moffat focused on men who he thought would be less at risk than women.

Moffat returned to Scotland and arranged to speak at several promotional meetings. He later wrote that he had developed a conviction that God was going to call a man to serve in Africa who would be important to God’s plan.

When Moffat arrived at his first event he was shocked to find that it was sponsored by a local women’s group and the auditorium was filled with all women. Although confused by what he had felt was his purpose, he gave a powerful call to service in Africa.

For several years Moffat believed either he had failed or misunderstood God’s direction. But what he did not know, was that a ten year old boy was behind the organ physically pumping a bellows to power the instrument.

That ten year old boy was David Livingston, who was so moved by Moffat’s message that after finishing medical school, went to Africa as a missionary.

David Livingston became the greatest Christian missionary leader of the nineteenth century and was instrumental in leading thousands to Christ. World leaders acknowledged him as one of the giants of the age. His acceptance of God’s call while hunched behind an old organ impacted the world.

Obey God and leave the results to Him. Always believe in “God’s Surprises”.

The Bible says in Proverbs 16:9, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” NIV
