Look for the Unexpected

In 1922, archeologist Howard Carter made a remarkable discovery. After careful study Carter and his team located the 3,300-year-old tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen, now known popularly as King Tut (pronounced Toot).

The tomb is the most complete royal tomb ever discovered with over 5,000 priceless artifacts. One of those artifacts is a necklace encrusted with stunning gems. The necklace is made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, turquoise and carnelian.

But the most amazing feature of this beautiful necklace is the center stone of bright, translucent yellow, carved in the shape of a beetle.

When scientists examined the necklace, they easily identified each stone except for the center gem. It was made of something completely unknown.

Ten years later, explorer, Ralph Bagnold, solved the mystery. On an expedition into the Libyan Great Sand Sea desert, 500 miles from Egypt, he discovered an area covered in the same bright, canary yellow glass of the necklace.

Further examination confirmed that the sand had been blasted by a meteor and its intense heat had created the yellow glass.

In 1922, the team that found the necklace never expected to find the source at a meteor crash site, hundreds of miles away.
