Open Your Eyes

After leaving the Royal Air Force at the end of World War Two, Edward Craven-Walker was eating in a restaurant in Hampshire, England.

While enjoying his meal he noticed an unusual glass object on the counter. When he asked what it was, the server said it was an egg-timer.

The server explained that when you dropped an egg into the blob of plastic floating in the water and heated it, the blob would rise to the top letting you know the egg was done.

Craven-Walker tracked the inventor of the egg-timer and discovered that he had died without filing a patent. Craven-Walker quickly filed his own patent and worked for 15 years improving the design.

In 1964 he introduced his altered device at a novelty convention in Hamburg, Germany. He called it the Astrolight. Two American investors were so impressed they bought the distribution rights to sell the product in the United States.

The item was so popular that it was soon selling 7 million units a year and continues to sell millions of devices every year.

The Astrolight has been a fabulous success all because Craven-Walker had “his eyes open” and saw an opportunity everyone else missed.

His discovery, renamed the Lava Lamp, is now a part of world culture.

Open your eyes to God’s opportunities. Learn to see possibilities. They are everywhere.

The Bible says in Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not human masters.” NIV
