A lot of years ago, when I was the special preaching assistant to Dr. Charles Stanley at the First Baptist Church in Atlanta, my wife Amy and I felt called to organize an additional ministry that would help me travel to other churches to speak.
We had little money but soon realized that we needed some basic office equipment. To keep up on correspondence, we purchased an IBM Selectric typewriter with simple, first-generation computer components. The $1500 we paid was a substantial amount for us.
The device did everything it was promoted to do, and we fell in love with its ease of operation and effective programming. But after three months, something went wrong.
I contacted IBM service and reported the problem. Because we were so small, I expected limited support. I knew we could not compare with the giant, local companies such as Coca Cola that used IBM.
To our surprise, we were greeted by a warm individual who assured us that our request was very important to them. The next day a man arrived in a suit and tie and fixed our typewriter. He thanked us for trusting them with our business needs and said that they were always available when needed. He charged us nothing and left.
This experience is a reminder that no one is truly a “small person” in God’s eyes. God sends you who and what you need because you are important to Him. When someone needs your help, always treat people with respect and go the “extra mile”. God may be sending you to meet their need.
The Bible says in Proverbs 3:27, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” NIV
