Recently I wrote a Ballpoint about Werner Siemens, a successful entrepreneur who learned fearlessness from a fight with a goose.
In this Ballpoint, I offer you another remarkable story from this remarkable man.
Werner served a number of years in the Prussian military. His skill at invention brought him recognition and promotion. Once he was almost expelled from the army because he took a public stand for religious freedom. He was narrowly saved by his invention of a new form of gunpowder that the army wanted to use.
Early in his military career, Werner served a friend as a second in an illegal duel. For violating the law he was sentenced to six months in prison.
What for most people, would have been a disgraceful disaster was for Werner, an exciting opportunity.
Werner, who had been frustrated by the lack of time to pursue his experiments, was overjoyed at the prospect of six months “off duty.”
On the way to the prison he bought extensive laboratory equipment which he installed in his cell. For the next few weeks, he happily pursued his research. When his commanding officer arranged his pardon and early release, Werner asked for an extended sentence so he could continue with his experiments.
Out of his unexpected time in prison, Werner perfected several technologies that later made him an enormous fortune.
Werner was such an optimist, he even turned the “bad” of prison into the “good” of success.
Look for God’s opportunities. They are everywhere.
The Bible says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” NKJV
