On a special October evening in 1951, Albert Engelken was standing in front of a bank window in New Jersey watching the third and final game of the National League playoffs between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. He was twelve years old.
The series was tied with the winner going to the World Series. The Dodgers were leading 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning when a young man from Scotland walked to the plate. With one strike and two men on base, the Scot, Bobby Thomson connected for a monster home run that rocketed into the left field stands. The Giants won the game and advanced to the World Series. It is still considered the most dramatic home run in baseball history.
Twelve-year-old Albert, a Giants fan, exploded with joy. He always recognized it as the greatest moment in his childhood.
Thirty-eight years later, Albert was an executive in Washington D.C., and still an avid baseball fan. He had even occasionally corresponded with his hero, the now retired Bobby Thomson.
On Albert’s 50th birthday while driving through New Jersey, his wife, Betsy, told Albert that a friend was meeting them at exit 10 on the Turnpike to deliver something.
When Albert pulled off and parked, another car was waiting. To his shock and amazement, Bobby Thomson left his car, walked over to Albert and said, “Happy Birthday, Albert.”
He then explained that Albert’s wife had written him and asked if he would meet on the Turnpike as a birthday gift for her husband. Thomson later said that he agreed to come because “If you have the chance in life to make somebody this happy, you have an obligation to do it .”
What can you do today to make someone happy? When you bless others, God blesses you.
Jesus said in John 13:35, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” NIV
