When I was the special preaching assistant to Dr. Charles Stanley at the First Baptist Church of Atlanta, we would often meet to discuss topics that Dr. Stanley wanted to emphasize in the coming weeks.
My favorite topic was “How to Listen to God”. Dr. Stanley even wrote a book about it.
Recently I experienced “listening to God” in a specific way.
Amy and I had attended a conference in Florida. We were scheduled to leave early in the morning following the final day. I rose at 4am with a request to wake Amy at 5:30.
I was standing in the dark hotel room when Amy woke early at 5am. She asked me to carry our luggage to the car while she dressed. This meant that I was packing 30 minutes sooner than planned.
I went to the car and after loading the luggage, I heard an inner voice telling me to take a walk. While walking I felt strongly impressed to pray for someone. Following the prayer, I felt equally impressed to talk with that person and mentally planned to call him later that week.
Just as suddenly I felt I should immediately return to the hotel. As I walked toward the entrance at 5:20am, I saw someone sitting by the front door. It was the man I had just prayed for.
I greeted him and shared my prayer with him. Our conversation revealed why God had led me to pray. It was amazing and important.
God led everything that happened that morning with exact precision (even Amy waking up earlier). All I had to do was “listen to God.”
Is God sending you signals? Learn to always listen to God. He will lead you where you’re supposed to go.
The Bible says in Psalm 32:8, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go…”. ESV
