When our children Allison and Jonathan were much younger, we spent some time at the Ft. Wilderness campground at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
We stayed in a camping trailer in a secluded, shady spot near the beach. It was a special family time. We took a boat every morning to the Magic Kingdom Park and watched fireworks from the beach at night.
We walked, swam and biked on trails bordered by spectacular tropical flowers and covered by enormous spreading shade trees.
One morning we decided to rent small individual boats instead of visiting the park. Amy, Jonathan and I had returned to the dock, but Allison was missing. After almost half an hour her boat sputtered and stopped several times as she worked her way back.
She was exhausted and sunburned and after she exited the boat, I asked to see the dock manager. As I was explaining the situation a Disney supervisor walked up and asked if there was a problem. As I answered he stopped me and politely said, “How can I fix this?”
I paused a moment then said I would like a refund. With a smile and no argument he immediately authorized my refund.
I have never forgotten those “five magic words”. Any frustration or disappointment I felt vanished when he asked how he could fix my problem.
The next time you are dealing with an angry person who wants to blame you for a situation, don’t argue, just use these words. The next time you experience a conflict with a family member, stop and use these words first. The “five magic words” can unlock the heart of another person and heal the moment.
