My earliest memory is sitting at my mother’s feet listening to her stories of our Eastern Kentucky family.
I absorbed wonderful stories about my Godly, praying grandfather and my great-grandfather, Long John Lafferty, who serviced mountain churches on horseback. The wisdom I learned molded my life.
Something similar happened when H. Jackson Brown decided to provide some life lessons from his Christian experience for his son, Adam, as the young man was leaving for college.
Brown carefully recorded practical, Bible based wisdom lessons from his family in a typed notebook and gave it to his son as he was set to drive away.
Several days later Adam called to tell his dad that he was so moved and helped by the recorded wisdom that he considered it one of the greatest gifts he had ever received. He promised to give it someday to his children.
Impressed by his son’s comments, Brown self-published a number of copies and persuaded local Nashville bookstores to offer his “wisdom” book.
The books sold so well that several store owners urged Brown to offer the book to a publisher.
Brown gave a copy to Larry Stone, owner of Rutledge Hill Press who turned it down. Forgetting the book, Stone left it on his desk. For five weeks, everyone who entered Stone’s office picked up the book, started reading, and raved about the contents.
Stone gradually noticed the popularity of the book and contacted Brown with a publishing offer.
The book, “Life’s Little Instruction Book” was a spectacular success, selling over 5 million copies.
People are hungry for wisdom. Collect and preserve all the wisdom God has taught you. Share that wisdom with coming generations. There is always a need for true wisdom, based on God’s word, the Bible and enriched by your own experiences.
The Bible says in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” NIV
