In the summer of 1950 Sam Walton was just getting started. He only had one Wal-Mart in Bentonville, Arkansas, but his legendary retail skills were already in place.
Once when Walton returned from a trip to New York City, he brought back cases of a summer sandal he had bought at a significantly cheap price. The Zori Sandals (the team called them thongs) shocked his executive team who were certain they would not sell.
Walton instructed his employees to place them on tables throughout the store with large signs. They were the fastest selling item in the history of the store. They cost 19 cents a pair.
My friend Dexter Yager once told me that the most important thing you can do in business is “to be valuable”. He believed that when you create value you will always improve your chances of success.
Sam Walton had an instinct for value. He respected his customers and worked always to give them the best value. Because of this he became the biggest retailer in the world.
How can you be valuable? How can you improve the lives of the people you meet? How can you extend God’s blessings to others?
The Bible says in Luke 6:38, “Give and it will be given to you…for with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”. NIV
