You Can Do It!

Silhouette of a person standing on a rocky peak against a pale sky, with the quote “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 written across the image.

Jimmy was born in Mississippi. His mother was a teacher, and his dad was a boxer. Because of a family situation he was sent, at age 5, to live with his maternal grandparents in Michigan.

The move was so traumatic that Jimmy stopped speaking. When he was pushed to speak in school, he stuttered so badly that communication was impossible.

Jimmy was a good student but advanced through the grades, unable to speak clearly. When he entered high school, an English teacher, Donald Crouch, decided the help the young student.

When he discovered that Jimmy wrote poetry, he encouraged him. Because Jimmy felt deeply about his poetry, the teacher was able to persuade him to recite his work in front of the class. With much difficulty, Jimmy began to control his stutter enough to present his poetry.

This experience led Jimmy to research various therapies that eventually enabled him to speak clearly. This determination changed his life.

He entered college as a pre-med major but his involvement in theater made him switch to Drama.

After graduation he served in the United States Army.

Following his discharge, he moved to New York City and began a successful Broadway career.

He eventually became one of the most famous actors in the world. James Earl Jones achieved lasting fame as the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and the voice of King Mufasa in The Lion King.

This happened because a young man with an impediment decided “he could do it!”

The Bible says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” NKJV
