Self-Control

Night city street blurred by long exposure with a red-and-white checker pattern in the foreground and light streaks along the sides.

The first entire NASCAR race shown on television was the 1979 Daytona 500, the biggest event in the sport.

An audience of several million watched Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough battle for the lead as the race neared the finish line.

The race was so close that both drivers were tied on the final lap. Just before the last curve the two drivers pushed so hard that their cars collided and swirled to a stop in the infield.

Bobby Allison, Donnie’s brother, left the race and pulled alongside the two wrecked cars. Suddenly all three drivers left their cars and began to argue about who had caused the incident. All three men lost their temper and a wild fistfight erupted.

While the men were fighting, Richard Petty, who was so far back he had no chance, sped by and won the race.

Because the Allison brothers and Yarborough lost their tempers they lost the biggest race of the year. Their lack of self-control cost them any hope of victory.

One of the fruits of being filled with the Holy Spirt in Galatians 5:22-23 is self-control. When you control your temper, you increase your odds of success.
