In March 2010, a Cleveland police officer noticed a car turn onto a street and commit a minor traffic violation. It was so trivial that the officer almost didn’t intervene but decided to investigate.
When the officer activated his lights the car suddenly sped off. The officer chased the vehicle for several blocks as it reached 90 mph. He called for backup and more officers joined the pursuit. At an intersection the car screeched to a stop and four men jumped out.
The policemen stopped and chased the men on foot. The men were blocked by a chain link fence topped by barbed wire. Two men were immediately apprehended and a third was caught trying to scale the fence. The fourth man, the driver, managed to climb over the fence and landed on the other side with deep, bleeding gashes from the barbed wire.
The driver thought he had escaped when he saw that he had landed in a prison yard. He was detained by the prison guards until the police arrested him.
The young man was taken to the hospital for stitches and asked why he had fled from the first policeman. He answered that he had a suspended license and didn’t want his mother to know he was driving.
The young man could have avoided serious legal problems and time in jail if he had simply decided to “stay calm and think.” His panic nearly ruined his life.
Whatever your circumstances, stay calm and think. Pray for God’s guidance. Don’t panic. Just think.
The Bible says in Psalm 56:3, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you [God].”
