I used to frequently share the speaking stage with a famous motivational speaker named Zig Ziglar. He was entertaining, educational and always effective. He was also encouraging and unfailingly guided and helped me.
One evening, we were both backstage in an arena waiting for the program to start. I was scheduled first followed by Zig.
As we waited, I asked him what he thought was the most important secret of personal success. He began his answer with references to a great attitude and hard work. But after a moment he said that even with those essential elements, one more thing was required. He said success is ultimately built on “finding someone’s need and filling it.”
A great example of this happened in New York City in the 1950’s.
Thousands of New Yorkers visited a group of independent movie theaters in the Times Square area every day. These theaters opened at 8 a.m. and were filled all day.
The Victory theater showed only old black and white horror films while the Times Square Theater specialized in Westerns. But one theater, the Apollo was different. It only showed foreign language films with English subtitles. And it was busier than any other theater. This theater had dominated the other locations for over 2O years.
One of the owners, Willam Brandt was curious about the Apollo’s success and arrived one morning to investigate. What he saw both shocked him and explained everything.
The theater was packed with deaf people who came every day to watch the films and read the subtitles. They had formed a happy, close-knit network that included deaf individuals throughout the city. It was a huge success.
The Apollo did what Zig Ziglar recommended. They had found a need and filled it.
Make this your secret of success. Find needs and fill them.
