Someone just told me this remarkable story.
For several years prior to the 9-11 attacks on The World Trade Center, a man who was responsible for evacuation procedures for his company had a scary thought. One day, while considering different evacuation plans, Rick Rescorla suddenly imagined a plane hitting the building. This led him to radically change his thinking.
He realized that a plane crashing into the towers would cause far more catastrophic damage than a conventional emergency such as a fire. He then changed all his plans and organized drills to teach people where to go in the event of a plane attack.
This man pushed his plans for several years until people began to mock and ridicule him for what they thought was his obsession. At some point they started to ignore the drills.
When the terrorist planes flew into the towers on 9-11, building security used a PA system to tell everyone to stay where they were. But the men and women who had been trained by Rescorla followed the instructions they had learned. His carefully crafted evacuation plans saved over 2,000 people.
The man who had been ridiculed and dismissed was proven right. His commitment to “plan ahead” saved lives.
Think ahead. Plan for consequences and emergencies. Ask God to guide you as you prepare for the future.
The Bible says in Proverbs 21:5, “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” NIV
