Pay Attention to People

Bees cluster on a honeycomb frame with many hexagonal cells and a wooden support beam underneath

In 1983, Roxanne Quimby, an unemployed single mother, was driving along a side road in Bangor, Maine.

Roxanne saw a roadside stand selling local products and stopped to look. The owner of the stand was Burt Shavitz, who was selling honey and beeswax from his private hives.

Roxanne and Burt liked one another and continued to talk. Roxanne complimented the quality of Burt’s honey and the two began a friendship.

Roxanne persuaded Burt to expand his business into local craft fairs and festivals. People liked the products so much that two friends established a partnership and expanded even more.

Burt had so much surplus beeswax that he started making and selling beeswax candles.

While looking through a 19th century book of homemade recipes, she noticed a recipe for lip balm that used beeswax. She brought the recipe to Burt who used it to make tubes of lip balm.

After selling thousands of the small tubes the partners incorporated their business in 1989 to sell natural products made from honey and beeswax. They called the company, “Burt’s Bees”.

The company still generates hundreds of millions of dollars from honey and beeswax.

All this happened because an unemployed single mother paid attention to a person she met by the side of road.

Are you paying attention to people? The next person you meet might have the idea that God can use to change your life.

The Bible says in Zechariah 4:10, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin…” TLT
