John Hench served many years as the senior visual and design leader of Walt Disney Parks. He was personally mentored by Disney himself.
One of Hench’s primary responsibilities was supervising all the colors used in the parks. This included signs, buildings, rides and attractions.
Hench believed that the right colors were essential to the Disney experience and carefully selected every shade and where they were placed.
Hench based his ideas on the Plochere Color System, created by Gustave and Gladys Plochere in 1948. The theory behind the system was that color communicates emotion and the right colors can inspire or create calm.
The Plocheres based their system on a candy called Necco Wafers, which Gustave loved as a child. Necco Wafers were carefully color coordinated to produce happy feelings in children. Every color was compatible and never clashed or disturbed.
When the Walt Disney Parks agreed to use the system, the colors selected successfully created the happy environment for which the parks became famous.
It is now known that colors deeply influence the limbic system in the brain. Red, for example, energizes. Yellow is associated with optimism and hope. Blue fosters relaxation and green promotes calm and has been shown to reduce stress levels.
God made a colorful world with shades and combinations that can affect your emotional state. Discover what colors enhance your happiness and use what God has created to improve your life.
The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He [God] has made everything beautiful in its time…” NIV
