Persistence

Ludwig Leichardt was an eccentric German scientist who traveled to Australia in 1842 to study local animals such as kangaroos. He was 29.

While conducting his research, he discovered that no European had ever crossed the Australian Outback, a vast, empty, brutal territory in the middle of the continent.

Although Ludwig spoke little English and was almost out of money, he determined to become the first European to conquer the interior.

Ludwig had no expedition experience, no maps and limited supplies. He entered the edge of the Outback alone and started walking. He eventually walked 1,500 miles, making notes and drawing maps (for which he had no training).

After his monumental trek, he returned to civilization and hurriedly wrote a book (he had NO experience with writing), which he published to great acclaim.

Because the book described an area of the earth that no one other than aborigines had seen, it became a publishing sensation. The Royal Geographical Society in London gave him one of their highest awards.

Suddenly wealthy patrons offered to pay for future expeditions. Ludwig’s world had dramatically changed. From an unknown, struggling scientist, he was now an international celebrity.

Ludwig’s success and fame were based on one thing, his extraordinary persistence.

What has God called you to do? Are you willing to pursue your greatest dreams with unrelenting persistence? You will never cross the finish line until you keep going.

The Bible says in Philippians 4:13, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” NIV
