When Jeff Bezos and his young wife, Mackenzie were debating how to generate support for a new idea for an Internet company, they used all their contacts to set up a crucial meeting with potential investors.
As the couple drove hundreds of miles to the meeting location, they used the time to brainstorm how best to present their proposal.
As they drove, two ideas surfaced. They wanted a name that would signal that the business would do big things, so they called it Amazon after one of the biggest rivers in the world.
But their next idea was even more important. They decided to start selling only books. Not because they liked books but because they realized that people who bought books were probably intelligent and usually well-educated.
They believed that people who read books were more likely to become reliable customers who would buy quality products.
After several years selling books Amazon transitioned to thousands of additional items. The plan worked. The base of customers built over the years continued to buy. Amazon was on the way to phenomenal success.
When Albert Einstein was asked by a reporter how to encourage intellectual development in children, he said to read the children fairy tales. He believed that nothing was more important than inspiring children to read.
Jeff and Mackenzie Bezos recognized that successful people were often readers. Einstein believed that reading was critical to intellectual growth.
